Susan Mapes and Charlie Barker ll

The children of Susan Lynn Mapes, William and Brandy Mapes and Rebecca and Jacob Harrod, and the children of Frank Charles “Charlie” Barker ll, Elizabeth and Brandon Wills and Victoria Barker, announce the engagement of their parents.
Parents of the bride-elect are her stepmother, Janet Eileen (Weaver) Mapes and the late George Ernest Mapes and Doris Louis (Cuppy) Mapes.
Parents of the groom-to-be are Peggy Joyce (Lane) Hunt and his stepfather J.M. Hunt and his stepmother Ruby Barker and the late Frank Charles Barker.
The bride-elect attended Northglenn High School. She was born in Iola and returned with her son William when she attended Allen County Community College. She also attended Morgan Community College where she earned an associate’s degree and Law Enforcement Technology Certificate. She attended National American University and is attending Fort Hays State University virtual college where she recently completed requirements for a Leadership Certificate. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business.
She served in the Women’s Army Corps in 1976. Her unit at Fort McClellan was involved in testing WACs to see if they could pass the men’s basic training test, which they did. Within a year, WACs were obsolete and transferred to the U.S. Army.
She is employed by the transportation department of USD 457 in Garden City.
The groom-to-be is a 1973 graduate of Garden City High School. In 1974, he completed a degree at the University of Kansas Medical Center College of Health Sciences and Hospital in the Emergency Medical Technician Program. He was an EMT in Garden City in the 1970s. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army National Guard, based in Garden City.
He is employed by Burtis Motors in Garden City as a parts manager.
