Church prepares for Thanksgiving feast

Members of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church will sport their distinctive red aprons next week as the church hosts its second annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
Organizers will prepare 10 turkeys, more than 60 pounds of mashed potatoes, 10 gallons of green beans, 16 dozen hot rolls, cranberry salad, dressing and sweet potatoes for the traditional Thanksgiving meal — enough to feed more than 200 people, Pastor Jan Chubb said.
Dinners will be served from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at the church, 202 S. Walnut St.
The church will accept only free-will offerings, to ensure everyone has a full meal that day, regardless of income.
Chubb estimated as many as 150 families were served at last year’s feast.
“We had some whole families who came, and a lot of elderly who said they just weren’t able to cook big dinners any more,” Chubb said.
Many picked up meals to take home with them; others ate at the church.
“We were pleased at the number of people who just sat around and talked,” she said. “We enjoyed seeing the people just come and hang out with us.”
Those who wish to carry out their meals can call ahead at 365-7306.
Proceeds from the meal go to St. Timothy’s community outreach projects, Chubb said.
