Emergency crews responded to two fatal accidents in southeast Kansas, both of which involved area residents.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Joseph A. Bagnato, Basking Ridge, N.J., was killed Friday morning in an accident near Chanute that involved Garrett Cleaver, 24, Colony.
Cleaver was southbound on U.S. 169, according to KHP, when his vehicle crossed the center line, clipped the mirror of a northbound vehicle driven by Chad Warner, Chanute, and then collided head-on with another northbound car driven by Bagnato.
Bagnato, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed. Cleaver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center for his injuries.
Warner was not injured.
MEANWHILE, four LaHarpe residents were injured in a Sunday evening traffic accident south of Fort Scott that killed a Kansas City woman.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Alanna B. Smith, 23, Kansas City, was southbound on U.S. 69, about 10 miles south of Fort Scott, when her car went left of center and collided head-on with a northbound Suburban driven by Andrew W. Womelsdorf, 34, LaHarpe.
Smith was killed in the accident, while a passenger in her car, Aisha M. Fort, 22, Pittsburg, was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Womelsdorf was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center for his injuries.
His passengers, Dasha Womelsdorf, 26, Shelby Womelsdorf, 1, and Shayda Womelsdorf, 24, all of LaHarpe, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.
All of the occupants were using safety restraints, according to KHP reports.
