Adopt pets from a shelter
I am Toni Macha and I am in the fifth grade. I have written this letter because I feel we have a very important issue to discuss. My family and I have adopted many good dogs from the Humane Society. That is why I believe more people should do the same.
Did you ever think that sometimes it’s easier to adopt dogs from the shelter than buy purebred puppies?
For instance, no one likes their new puppy tearing up their furniture or having accidents in the house. If you adopted an older shelter dog, they would probably already be through their chewing stage. Plus, many people think older dogs are easier to train.
There are also some very important reasons you should adopt dogs from the Humane Society. Since we do not have a shelter in our community, the animals get placed at the vet. If the animal is not claimed or adopted in three to five days, it is euthanized.
Some dogs are hauled to the shelter because their owner abused them. A lot of people bring dogs to the Humane Society because they don’t have the money to take care of them properly.
Are you looking for a certain kind of breed? Always look to the Humane Society first. You might be surprised with the variety of dogs that get placed in the shelter. They are also much cheaper, so you don’t have to pay hundreds of dollars on a purebred dog.
I wanted a German shepherd and I found the greatest dog you could ever ask for at the Lawrence Animal Shelter.
Please know I appreciate you taking the time to read my letter. Think about what I have told you, and keep in mind that just because you spend hundreds of dollars on a purebred dog does not mean they will be any better compared to a shelter dog.
So if you’re thinking about buying a purebred dog, consider adopting one from a shelter and help one in need of a good home.
