Working hard through the first two days of two-a-day practices are Iola High’s Mustangs. Mustang head coach Rick Horton and his staff put the players through a number of speed, agility and technique drills. On Thursday, the hitting starts as teams don pads and go full gear to prepare for season openers. The Mustangs are coming off the team’s first playoff season in 24 years and under different leadership on the field. They are readying to push back into the playoffs in 2009. Iola opens the season at Columbus in Southeast Kansas League play Sept. 4.

Biking Across Kansas 2009 stopped in Humboldt Thursday night. There were 870 bicyclists from 28 different states participating in the cross-state ride from Syracuse to Louisburg — west to east.
