When a team’s big inside scorer steps out and starts the game by hitting two three-pointers, it’s a pretty good sign.
Allen County Community College’s Andra Bailey did just that Wednesday at home against Penn Valley Community College. Bailey and the Red Devils posted an 86-69 win.
“It was a good win to end the semester on. We have some momentum going into the break which we hope carries right into conference play next semester,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC men’s head coach.
Hayes said the Red Devils had a good start against a good Penn Valley team. The first six to eight minutes were back and forth until the Red Devils pushed out to a 45-32 lead at halftime.
“Penn Valley is an explosive team. They kept changing defenses on us and our guys did a good job of adjusting. Keevis and Erik shot the three well against their zone defenses.”
keevis Tukes and Erik Law combined for seven threes. Tukes, who hit four, finished with 16 points and Law fired in 19 points.
Bailey had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Devils. He went 9 of 13 at the free-throw line.
Hayes said the Red Devils had a comfortable lead in the second half. Penn Valley challenged the Red Devils several times, cutting the gap to 10 points, but the home team was up to the task.
“We kept our turnovers down despite them pressing us hard in the second half,” Hayes said.
Anthony Clagett also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. He made four steals.
Dennis Rumph cleared 12 rebounds for Allen County. The Red Devils shot 42 percent, 29 of 69, from the field and went 17 of 26 at the line.
Penn Valley got 24 points from its top player, Tyrone Hooker. Breon White added 10.
