It comes down to one race for area cross country runners. A top-10 finish puts individuals in state meet slots and a top-three finish by a team earns it a trip to the Kansas Class 4-3-2-1A State Cross Country Meet.
Iola High’s Mustangs and Fillies are headed to the Kansas Class 4A Regional Cross Country meet Saturday. They’ll run on a course at El Dorado State Park.
There will be no fees assessed to get into the state park or in to watch the regional race, according to host school, El Dorado. Go to Bluestem Point of the park, 3476 NE State Road 177, El Dorado.
The girls’ race is at 2 p.m. followed by the boys’ race.
The Mustangs will field a full team in the boys’ 5K race. Iola finished second in regional action last year and took seventh in the Class 4A state meet.
Iola’s boys have four runners back from that team led by sophomore Roman Yocham, who finished second in the regional race a year ago. Seniors Kent Toland, Ryan Weir and Aaron Cheung were on that team and will run Saturday.
Also running for Iola this year are seniors Ryan Latta and Michael Middleton, who is a first-year runner, and sophomore Bryan Miller.
“Mulvane is the defending state champion and has been ranked No. 1 all season then El Dorado is ranked sixth. I’d say those will be one and two as teams,” said Marvin Smith, IHS cross country coach.
“We’re just outside the rankings and we have a chance to get that third spot as a team. But there are two or three other teams such as Chanute we’ll have to battle for it.”
Iola High’s Fillies will have two runners in Saturday’s 4K girls’ race. They are first-year runners Leah Weir, a junior, and Sydney Owens, a sophomore.

HUMBOLDT High and Marmaton Valley High cross country runners are at Mound City Saturday. The Kansas Class 2A Regional Cross Country meet will be contested at Sugar Valley Golf Course, hosted by Jayhawk-Linn High School.
Raquel Hill, a junior, goes after her third trip to the Class 2A state meet. Hill is the lone female runner for Humboldt High.
Humboldt’s boys enter a team of senior Cody Wright, juniors Jacob Jones Reece Criger and junior Chris Headley and freshmen Nick Keazer, Dylan Greve and Kile Martin.
Marmaton Valley will have Zachary Louk, a sophomore, running to earn a second straight state meet trip. Also running is freshman Ryan Smith.
The girls’ 4K race starts at 3 p.m. followed by the boys’ 5K.

YATES CENTER High and Crest High cross country runners are at Wichita’s Cessna Activity Center Saturday for a Kansas Class 1A Regional Cross Country Meet.
The girls’ 4K race starts at 2 p.m. followed by the boys’ 5K.
Yates Center senior Dylan Sicka finished second in last year’s Class 2A state race. He is looking for a return trip to the state meet but this year in Class 1A.
Joining Sicka in the race are Wildcat teammates Paul Stockebrand, a junior, and Sam Aguirre, a freshman.
“All three boys have run this week and are feel good,” said Kevin Barnes, YCHS coach. Sicka missed last week’s league meet because of illness.
Yates Center junior Cherokee Shaffer and freshman Chari Dyer will run in the girls’ race.
Crest High’s girls will have juniors Italy Loving and Kolbie Gilliland to lead them at the regional. The two girls were on last year’s state qualifying team. Freshmen Delanie Cammack and Kurston Gilliland are expected to run at the regional also.
The Crest boys are lead by sophomores Dustin Davis-Jones, Trevor Holman, Chris Brailler, Jory Ramsey and Cole Bowen. Freshman David Womelsdorf joins the group,
