Bulldogs defeat YCHS Wildcats

WAVERLY — For three quarters, Yates Center High’s boys were able to find an offensive rhythm and contend with a taller Waverly High front court.
The Wildcats led 39-37 before Waverly took control underneath.
“We just need to learn to finish,” Wildcat head coach Jason Weilert said after Waverly pulled away for a 60-45 win.
The loss drops Yates Center’s record to 4-4 on the season.
“I saw bright spots,” Weilert said. “We just have to get some things worked out, and our wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
The Wildcats started slowly, trailing 15-6 after one period and 25-16 at halftime.
“We started playing better in the second quarter and got some decent looks in the third quarter,” Weilert said.
But Waverly made a concerted effort down the stretch to get the ball to its 6-7 forward Josh Teal.
“They just pounded the ball inside,” Weilert said, “and we started rushing our shots.”
The Bulldogs sealed the win at the free-throw line, hitting 18 of 25 charities. Yates Center, on the other hand, hit just 3 of 7 attempts from the line.
“That’s your 15-point spread right there,” Weilert said. “I was happy with the way we boxed out on rebounds. Blake Francis stepped up and hit some big shots for us, and Dalton (Smith) really keyed our third-quarter run.
“We’re slowly getting better,” he continued. “We’ll get there.”
Smith led the way with 15 points, followed by Francis with nine and Jake Morrison with eight.
Teal, limited to three points in the first half, wound up with 22 to pace Waverly. Ian Steward followed with 11 and Justin Lee with 10.
Yates Center hosts Fredonia Friday in the school’s winter homecoming.
