Burlington rallies past Yates Center

BURLINGTON — A safety and touchdown by host Burlington High effectively dashed the hopes of Yates Center High’s quest for the team’s first victory of 2009.
Burlington erased a 14-8 deficit with the 9-0 run to topple Yates Center 15-14.
The loss drops Yates Center to 0-6 on the season.
Yates Center looked to have the upper hand, breaking a 6-6 deadlock via a 75 -yard touchdown pass from Austin Knoblock to Devin Gregg in the third quarter. An Andrew Weber pass to Garrett Petit on the two-point attempt gave the Wildcats the eight-point lead.
Burlington took an early 6-0 lead before David Vanhoose returned an interception 44 yards for Yates Center to set up his team’s first score of the contest. Knoblock found Weber followed the pick with a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to tie the proceedings.
But a safety by Burlington closed the gap to 14-8 early in the fourth quarter. Then a Burlington touchdown coupled with the extra point kick gave the home Wildcats the one-point win.
Knoblock rushed 10 times for 37 yards and completed 3 of 10 passes for 102 yards. Gregg’s sole catch covered 75 yards, while Weber pulled in two receptions for 27 yards. Weber also had 16 assisted tackles and three solos on defense. Gregg had three solo stops and five assists. Donald Bennett had two solos and six assists to go with two interceptions.
Yates Center begins Class 2-1A District 6 play next Friday at Humboldt.
