Chargers send Lancers to the consolation side of tournament play

YATES CENTER — Crest High’s boys found themselves behind the 8-ball early on Tuesday evening.
But the Lancers, trailing by nine points early, fought their way back and even took a lead early in the fourth quarter against Cherryvale High.
But three-pointers by the Chargers on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter gave Cherryvale full control.
The Chargers drained several free throws in the game’s final minutes to win 51-39 in the opening round of the Wildcat Winter Classic hosted by Yates Center High.
Crest (2-1) takes on Uniontown, a 59-58 loser to Sedan Tuesday, Friday in the consolation bracket. Tipoff is 8:30 p.m. in Norris Gymnasium.
“We had a horrible first quarter,” Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck said. “We didn’t play hard and we didn’t play smart.”
Cherryvale took an early 15-6 lead. Crest slowly chipped away, trailing 20-14 at intermission and 30-28 after three quarters.
“I was proud of how we tried to do the right things after the first quarter,” Hermreck said. “We had to fight and claw to get back into it.”
Bryan Newton led the way for the Lancers with 23 points, but no other Crest player had more than two field goals.
Cherryvale, meanwhile, was led by Micah Booe’s 20 points. Dillon Blake added 13.
Cherryvale drained 17 of 24 free throws. Crest went 2 of 7.
The Register did not receive a report on Uniontown’s tournament game. The Eagles are 0-2 on the season.
