Cubs hold off Bullpups

CANEY — Not much pleases Humboldt High Cub head coach David Taylor than his players playing a full four quarters with intensity. Marking up a victory at the end is the payoff for the Cubs.
Humboldt opened the second semester of basketball on the road Tuesday and came away with a 52-50 win over Caney Valley High’s Bullpups. The win pushed the Cubs to 2-1 in Tri-Valley League play and 4-2 overall.
“We were down early and Caney was pressuring us. We started handling the press and got better ball movement,” Taylor said. “The intensity level was key for us. Our players played hard the whole game.”
The Bullpups were up 19-14 at the end of the first quarter. With a 16-6 run in the second period, the Cubs took control of the contest.
Humboldt was up 30-25 at halftime and outscored Caney Valley 11-8 in the third quarter.
“We were up 10 or 12 points in the second half. Caney pressured us to get back in the game. We missed some free throws and had turnovers late but the guys never stopped working,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the Bullpups had a shot with about 10 seconds remaining but “it was off and we got the rebound.”
The Cub shot 66 percent, 22 of 33, from the field and went 6 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Tevin Strack “continued to play well” scoring 25 points, pulling down six rebounds and coming up with three steals. Noah Thornbrugh added 10 points and had five rebounds.
Chris Coronado and Derrik McCall had two assists each.
“Chris did a good job defensively on the LaForge kid,” Taylor said.
Gabe LaForge fired in 19 points, including four three-pointers, for the Bullpups. Matt Barlow had 13 points.
Humboldt lost both the junior varsity and freshman games. No scores were available.
