Cubs lose, Wildcats win in tournament

MORAN — After digging out of an early hole, Humboldt High’s boys committed a few costly penalties at inopportune times down the stretch Tuesday.
Add to that foul trouble and struggles at the free throw line, and you have a 61-50 loss to Oswego High.
The defeat, in the opening round of Marmaton Valley High’s Preseason Tournament, drops Humboldt’s record to 1-1 on the season.
The Cubs return to tournament action Thursday against Marmaton Valley.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 42-32 win over Northeast High’s Vikings Tuesday.
“We played hard and we played well at times,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said. “Foul trouble hurt us. We don’t go very deep, and obviously free throw shooting hurt both teams. We had to scramble with some different lineups.”
The Cubs had three players foul out and a fourth with four fouls at game’s end, while going 14 of 27 from the line.
Oswego jumped to an early 19-10 lead although the Cubs erased much of the deficit in the second quarter.
Oswego led 26-25 at the break and 42-41 after three quarters.
The Indians closed the game with a 19-9 run to seal the win.
“We made some mistakes, but I was very pleased with our effort and intensity,” Taylor said. “If we keep it up, we’ll be successful.”
Derek McCall paced Humboldt with 15 points and four steals, while Tevin Strack chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Damon Trotnic was the primary catalyst for Oswego, pouring in a game-high 24 points.
Marmaton Valley and Northeast played to a 6-6 tie in the first quarter. Marmaton Valley got the edge in the second period, 14-7.
The Wildcats built on their 20-13 halftime lead by outscoring the Vikings 7-6 in the third and 15-13 in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats hit 14 of 21 free throws in the game. The Vikings did not shoot a single free throw in the contest.
Tanner McNutt fired in 13 points for the Wildcats. Dalton Houk added 10.
Austin Bogina scored 12 points for Northeast. Aaron Leroy had 10 points.
