MORAN — Hitting uncontested 15-foot shots made the difference Thursday night in a close basketball game.
Humboldt High’s Cubs went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line in both overtime periods against Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats. The Cubs came out with a 68-62 double-overtime victory.
“Both teams played hard tonight and I was very pleased with the way we hit free throws in the overtimes,” said David Taylor, Humboldt head coach. “We got key rebounds and worked to get good looks at the basket.”
With Thursday’s result, the Cubs improved to 1-1 and the Wildcats dropped to 1-1 in this week’s MVHS Preseason Tournament. Oswego beat Northeast 55-32 Thursday to post a 2-0 tournament mark.
Tonight’s final round of games has Humboldt taking on Northeast and Marmaton Valley playing Oswego.
Marmaton Valley High head coach Denny Lasley used to be an assistant coach for Taylor, when Taylor coached at Marmaton Valley.
The Wildcats led 13-8 after one quarter of play but the Cubs outscored the Cats 20-11 in the second. Humboldt was up 28-24 at intermission.
The Cubs increased their lead to 38-28. The Wildcats battled back, erasing the 10-point deficit with a 21-11 run in the fourth quarter.
“We had the ball and good look at the basket for the final shot in regulation,” Taylor said. “We were up by three in the first overtime when Marmaton Valley’s Ethan Ericson banked in a three at the buzzer to tie it and send us into another overtime.”
Humboldt outscored Marmaton Valley 10-4 in the second extra period. The Cubs were 15 of 22 from the charity stripe for the game.
Tevin Strack fired in a game-high 30 points for Humboldt. Derrick McCall added 15 and Tyler Gean had 12 points.
Ericson finished with 18 points for the Wildcats. Tanner McNutt had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Zack Louk tossed in 10 points. Tanner Lewis dished out four assists.
Marmaton Valley shot 46 percent, 23 of 50, from the field and hit 13 of 23 free throw attempts.
