Cubs win, finish second in tourney

MORAN — Humboldt High shook off the doldrums from a lethargic first half Friday, then turned to senior Tevin Strack for their offense as they rolled to a 60-38 win over Northeast High.
The victory came in the final round of the Marmaton Valley High preseason tournament. The Cubs (3-1) went 2-1 in tournament play.
“We started in the first half like we had a built-in excuse, because we played such a tough game the night before,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said.
A halftime speech, followed by a bit of “intestinal fortitude” seemed to be just the elixir the Cubs needed.
Strack, limited to four points in the first half, scored 21 after the break.
“Tevin has at times gotten down on himself,” Taylor said. “He played very well in teh second half. That 21 points was all him. He started playing hard and getting to the basket.”
The Cubs led 12-8 after one period and 25-17 at the break. An 18-9 third-quarter spurt gave Humboldt a 43-26 lead after three quarters.
With the win, Humboldt already has surpassed their win total (2) from the 2008-09 season.
“We’re not making the same mistakes we made last year. And we got taller,” Taylor joked. “I’m no longer the tallest guy on the team.”
Derek McCall chipped in with 10 points, while Noah Thornbrugh scored eight. Other statistics were unavailable.
Marc Graves scored eight to pace the Vikings.
