Allen Coumty Community College sophomore Andra Bailey (33) looks for an open teammate in a recent home game. Bailey helped lead the Red Devils in upending NJCAA Division II, seventh-ranked Johnson County Community College 80-73 Wednesday at Overland Park. It was the Jayhawk Eastern Division opener for both teams.

OVERLAND PARK — Mike Hayes, Allen County Community College men’s head basketball coach, knows how difficult it is to go on the road and win in the Jayhawk Conference, let alone face a nationally ranked team that has not lost in this young season.
So Hayes appreciates what his Red Devils did Wednesday night in their Jayhawk Eastern Division opener.
The Red Devil men went into Johnson County Community College’s gym and pulled out an 80-73 victory. They handed the NJCAA Division II, seventh-ranked Cavaliers their first loss of the season.
And more important the win gives a boost to the Red Devils. They are 1-0 in Jayhawk East play and 4-4 overall.
Allen County goes on the road again Saturday in conference action. The Red Devils travel to Arkansas City to play Cowley County Community College (2-1 Jayhawk East, 6-5).
“Playing conference games before Christmas for the first time ever and on the road for both of them, there were concerns because how tough it is in this conference,” Hayes said.
“But we started extremely well Wednesday night. We played like I anticipated we would as a team, aggressive at both ends of the court, players penetrating and creating for teammates offensively and just focused throughout the game.”
Hayes said if the Red Devils were down 2-0 or 4-2 early, it would have been the only time they trailed in the game. “But I don’t remember us trailing. We were up by 18 points at halftime and stayed focused.”
Allen County posted a 48-29 halftime advantage over Johnson County. The Cavaliers battled back in the second half with a 44-32 scoring edge but couldn’t catch the Red Devils.
The Red Devils had all 11 roster players suited up for the first time this season.
“That was great to have every one available. We still haven’t had a practice with all 11 so were looking forward to that to happen,” Hayes said.
Andra Bailey, ACCC’s 6-4 sophomore forward, turned in “one of his better games” against the Cavaliers. Bailey had a game-high 23 points plus led the Devils with four assists.
Bailey leads the Jayhawk Conference in rebounding. He had eight rebounds.
Sophomore guards Anthony Clagett and Aaron Jackson reached double-digit scoring for Allen County. Clagett ended up with 18 points and Jackson tossed in 12 points plus had three steals.
The Red Devils shot 57 percent, 20 of 35, from the field in the first half. For the game, they were 33 of 64 for 52 percent
Only 13 turnovers were counted for the Red Devils and just six by halftime. Allen County had 16 assists as a team and 36 rebounds.
“We had good movement of the basketball on offense which is what I’ve been striving for,” Hayes said. “Defensively, Johnson County has two guards averaging 20 points a game. We did a very good job defending them.”
Ronnie Boggs and Kyle Speed were held in check by the Red Devils. Boggs finished with 14 points and Speed hit for 12 points. Haydon Parks tossed in 14 points and Ryan Magdziarz scored 13 points.
Johnson County (0-1, 7-1) shot 48 percent, 25 of 52 from the field. The Cavaliers did hit 10 three-point field goals to ACCC’s five.
Johnson County cashed in on 13 of 23 free throw attempts while Allen County hit 9 of 15. The Cavaliers also controlled 36 rebounds.
“Success creates more success and that’s what happened in this game. We had a very good start and built from that even when they made a run at us late,” Hayes said.
“We’ll take a lot of confidence into Saturday’s game but we’re challenging our players. Yes, this is what we did but it will be a new game and a tough place to win at Cowley County. We have to stay focused.”
The men’s game at Cowley County tips off at 7 p.m.
Next week the Red Devil men play at home twice to finish out the first semester of action. Monday Arkansas Tech’s junior varsity takes on the Red Devils then Penn Valley comes to Iola Dec. 10. Both games start at 7 p.m. in the ACCC gym.
