Uniontown High senior Abbie Smith signed a national letter of intent Nov. 11 to play volleyball at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg. On hand for the signing were (left to right) her parents, Teresa and Tracy Smith, UHS athletic director Jim Mason and UHS head volleyball coach Jackie Hall.

UNIONTOWN — Abbie Smith is a three-sport athlete at Uniontown High School. She’s excelled in all three but it was not difficult for her to decided which one to pursue in college.
“There was no contest. I’ve been drawn to volleyball all my life and love the game,” Smith said.
Smith, a 5-9 senior, signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg. She made the decision Nov. 11 on the heels of Uniontown High’s trip to the Kansas Class 2A State Volleyball Tournament.
“I’ve attended Pittsburg State’s volleyball camps since I was a freshman. It’s where I am comfortable and Coach Suberu knows what I can do and has a strong program at Pitt State,” Smith said.
Smith played outside hitter and middle blocker for the Eagles, who went 31-12 this season. She helped lead the Eagles to a Three Rivers League championship and a Class 2A substate championship.
“Abbie is a superb athlete with room to develop into an outstanding collegiate volleyball student-athlete,” said Ibraheem Suberu, Pittsburg State head volleyball coach, in a release on the PSU athletic Web site.
“She is still growing in the sport and we are excited for her to join us. She is a proven winner with strong self discipline and focus to accomplish set goals.”
Suberu announced the signing of five players in the early signing period in November. He has been the head coach at Pittsburg State for 10 years.
Pittsburg State is a member of the MIAA conference and is a NCAA Division II program.
“They’ve said I’d be an outside hitter and probably redshirt my freshman year. That’s alright. I know Coach Suberu can teach me a lot about the game,” Smith said.
Smith finished her senior season for the UHS Eagles with 347 kills. She was 585 of 690 net attacks. Smith racked up 1,540 career kills.
She had 72 solo blocks and was credited with 186 block assists. For her career, Smith had 199 solo blocks and 291 double blocks.
Smith was a 97 percent server, serving 158 points. She passed the volleyball at a 66 percent clip.
“I believe I can take a positive attitude and leadership qualities to the Pittsburg State program. I’m happy to have the opportunity to play at the college level and I’ll do what the coaches want to do for the team,” Smith said.
Smith was named to the 2009 All-Class 2A state tournament team. She has been a Three Rivers League All-League selection three years.
Smith received honorable mention to the Under Armour High School All-America Team. She also is a two-time Kansas Volleyball Association Class 2A, second team selection.
Smith plays for the Uniontown High basketball team. She also is a Class 2A state track meet qualifier in hurdles and long jump.
She is the daughter of Teresa and Tracy Smith, Moran. She plans to pursue a music education degree at Pittsburg State.
