FREDONIA — For the second straight year, Uniontown High’s Eagle girls are state golf tournament bound as a team. Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls qualified two golfers for next week’s Kansas Class 3-2-1A Girls’ State Golf Tournament.
Working through cold, misty and windy weather Tuesday, the Eagles combined for third place at the regional tournament at Fredonia. Fredonia won the regional championship with a four-player total of 417 with Caney Valley in second with a 432.
Uniontown had a team total of 547 for the 18-hole event. Eureka was fourth with 550, followed by Yates Center at 577 and Galena at 586.
The top three teams qualify for state tournament action. Also going are the next five lowest individuals not on qualifying teams.
That means Yates Center’s Maggie German and Emily Baker, who were 15th and 17th, respectively, earned state tournament berths.
German, a senior, is a two-time state qualifier for the Wildcats and Baker is a freshman.
“The conditions were very poor to golf with temperatures only hitting 44 degrees plus it was misting and rainy. The girls looked miserable,” said Jason Tourtillott, UHS girls’ golf coach. “After nine holes when I looked over our scores I kind of counted us out.
“You have to give our girls credit for hanging in there and fighting.”
Tourtillott said as each of the Eagle golfers came in after their first nine holes of golf he told them they were not going to make it if they couldn’t cut a few strokes off here and there. The Eagles heeded their coach’s words and “did just that.”
Uniontown senior Bethany Ericson led the way with a 120 (62-58), finishing 14th. Sophomore Brooke Murrow was 19th with a 132 (68-64).
Sophomores Emily Simpson and Veronica Harrison were 21st and 24th, respectively. Simpson carded a 145 (70-75) and Harrison had a 150 (67-83).
First-year sophomore Sabrena McAnulty shot a 166 (85-81) and junior Raven Hixon had a 193 (96-97).
Yates Center’s German shot even rounds of 60 for a 120. Baker had a total of 131 (65-66).
Also playing for Yates Center were junior Margie Hartwig with a 156 (83-73) and senior Maggie Jennings with a 170 (83-87).
Winning the individual regional championship was Maggie Sloan, the lone golfer from Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan High. Sloan shot an 89 (45-44), winning by 13 strokes. Fredonia’s Wait Lindsey was second with a 102.
The state tournament is Monday at Lake Barton Golf Course in Great Bend.
