PITTSBURG — Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan High’s Panthers manhandled the visiting Uniontown High Eagles in Thursday’s regular season finale.
It was also a Class 2-1A, District 7 contest. The Panthers notched a 45-6 victory to win the district championship.
Despite the loss, Uniontown is the district runner-up and advances into next week’s playoffs. The Eagles travel to Oswego, the winner of District 8, Tuesday.
“We knew we would have to eliminate all mistakes to have a chance against a team the caliber of Colgan,” said Chad Stroud, Eagle head coach. “This was a total team loss. We were unable to achieve any consistency on offense.”
Colgan had a 14-0 lead when the Eagles found the end zone. Jordan Woods had a one-yard touchdown run. The extra-point kick failed.
Tyler Jeck scored his second of three touchdowns for the Panthers on a 57-yard punt return. Colgan led 33-6 at intermission. They added 12 more points in the third quarter.
“Defensively, we had way too many breakdowns, which led to big scoring plays by Colgan,” Stroud said.
“We must play much more fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball to have a shot at Oswego Tuesday.”
Ben Dixon rushed for 21 yards and had 39 yards receiving for the Eagles.
Brenton Esslinger, Matt Maloney and Max Labbe each made five tackles. Maloney forced a fumble which Tyler Hall recovered. Woods made an interception.
