Fifth-ranked Vikings deck Mustangs

PARSONS — When Seth Walden drilled a three-pointer with 5:25 left in the first quarter, Iola High’s Mustangs were hanging with the fifth-ranked Kansas Class 4A boys’ basketball team.
It was 5-5 then Parsons High’s Vikings left the Mustangs in their wake. By the end of the first quarter in Tuesday’s game, the Vikings were up 17-7 en route to a 70-43 win.
“Their athleticism took over and we couldn’t keep up with their overall team speed,” said Steve Taylor, Mustang head coach.
The Mustangs found themselves behind 36-16 at halftime. They scored 16 points in the third quarter but couldn’t slow down the Vikings, who put in 15 points.
“We played better in the second half. We were more patient offensively,” Taylor said.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-3 in Southeast Kansas League play and overall. The Vikings stayed undefeated at 5-0 and are 4-0 in SEK play.
The Mustangs travel to Girard in non-league action Friday. They are at home next week in SEK action with Fort Scott Tuesday and Coffeyville on Friday.
Kent Toland scored 11 points and had five rebounds for the Mustangs. Seth Walden had 12 points.
Iola shot 36 percent, 18 of 50, from the field. The Mustangs were 3 of 5 at the free-throw line.
Gerald Austin fired in 18 points for the Vikings. Parsons had three players with nine points each and two with eight points apiece.
Parsons cashed in on 14 of 23 free throw attempts.
Parsons made a sweep of the games Tuesday. It took the junior varsity game 61-44. Jerrik Sigg fired in 14 points for Iola.
In freshman action, Parsons beat Iola 58-47. Levi Ashmore had 18 points.
