CHANUTE — Coming out flat against a focused Chanute High Lady Blue Comet team, Iola High’s Fillies fell behind quickly. They never made up the ground Friday night.
Chanute scored 27 of its 36 first-half points off Iola turnovers and offensive rebounds. The Lady Blue Comets dashed out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back.
The Fillies finally got on the scoreboard with 2:23 left in the first quarter. Kayla Callahan had a basket.
Kendra Taiclet made it 14-4 with a minute to play. Chanute was up 18-5 at the end of the period.
“We had 12 turnovers at halftime. Chanute was hurting us the most with the offensive rebounds,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach, after her team lost 58-26.
“Chanute was focused and on fire to start the game. I was disappointed in our effort in the first half.”
Chanute outscored Iola 18-6 in the second quarter. The Lady Blue Comets controlled a 36-11 halftime margin.
“We came out and played better in the second half. The effort was there but we didn’t shoot well,” Carlson said.
Iola finished with 17 turnovers.
But the bigger Chanute team dominated on the boards and continued to shoot the basketball well in the second half. Iola trailed 48-20 after three quarters of play.
The Lady Blue Comets stretched their lead to 56-21 by the midway mark of the fourth period. The teams finished the game with a running clock.
“We never matched the intensity Chanute had. We’ll work on it over Christmas and get better,” Carlson said.
