Grizzlies defeat Mustangs in freshman game

Iola High’s freshmen struck first Monday night. But it was their last touchdown of the night in a 26-6 loss to visiting Labette County High’s Grizzlies.
Iola quarterback Mason Coons connected with Eric Heffern for a 31-yard touchdown pass play with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The attempt for the extra point failed.
Labette County pulled ahead on an 85-yard interception return by Jacob Rexwinkle to end the period. Cody Marsh put the Grizzlies in front with a two-point conversion run.
In the second quarter, Cole Reazin scored for Labette County. Rexwinkle added a nine-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, then Marsh scored on a 15-yard pass play in the fourth quarter.
“The freshmen played really well,” said Cody Hager, Iola High assistant coach. “We need to focus on the little things which will be make us better.”
For Iola, Tyler Clubine had 21 yards on seven carries and Stephen McDonald had 23 yards on five carries.
Coons was 8 of 16 for 110 yards passing and had a minus-53 yards on eight carries. Caine Duran had one carry for a minus-seven.
Levi Ashmore caught four passes for 71 yards. Heffern had one catch for 31 yards and Zeph Larney had two catches for eight yards.
Devin Burton had two solo tackles, five assisted tackles and a quarterback sack. Clubine had one solo stop and four assists while Ashmore and Coons each had one solo and two assisted tackles. Eli Grover had two solo stops and a fumble recovery.
McDonald had six assisted tackles while Larney and Joseph Myrick had five assists each. Duran had three assists while Aaron Barclay and Jason Tidd had two assisted tackles. Kody Mullins had one assisted tackle and Heffern had one solo tackle.
