Jayhawks slip around Wildcats

MOUND CITY — Marmaton Valley boys’ head coach Denny Lasley was almost certain his team was headed for its third consecutive overtime game Tuesday evening.
In the game’s waning seconds and the Wildcats down by three, 36-33, senior Ethan Ericson drained what Lasley thought was a game-tying trey.
But an official ruled Ericson’s foot was on the three-point line when he shot. Instead, Marmaton Valley still trailed by one to Jayhawk-Linn.
The Wildcats immediately fouled on the inbounds pass, and host Jayhawk-Linn High hit one of two free throws, but the Wildcats were unable to get a final shot up before the final buzzer sounded in a 37-35 loss.
The defeat comes after losses in double-overtime and overtime in the Wildcats’ previous two games.
Had the ball bounced a little differently, Marmaton Valley could conceivably be rolling into the Christmas break with a 5-0 record. Instead, they sport a 2-3 mark.
“They got the early lead on us, and we fought hard, but we just couldn’t match their size inside,” Lasley said. “We made some mistakes that hurt us.”
Dalton Houk and Kurtis LaRue paced the Wildcats with 16 and 14 points, respectively. LaRue controlled nine rebounds and Houk had six boards.
Ericson led Marmaton Valley with four assists and three steals.
Clayton Dierksen poured in 22 points to lead Jayhawk-Linn.
Marmaton Valley returns to action Jan. 5 at home against Frontenac.
