WICHITA — Crest High’s boys have never had a cross country runner at the state meet. Now, the Lancers are sending a team in 2009.
Saturday’s Kansas Class 1A Regional Cross Country Meet produced a couple of firsts for area runners.
The Lancers earned their first trip to a state meet by claiming the runner-up trophy. Pretty Prairie won the team championship with 17 points and Crest had 32 points.
Crest placed two runners in the top 10, claiming medals. Sophomores Dustin Davis-Jones ran fifth in the 5K race in 18 minutes, 33 seconds. Sophomore Trevor Holman placed 10th in 19:13.
Others placing for Crest were sophomore Chris Brallier in 21st in 21:03 and right behind him was freshman David Womelsdorf in 21:04. Jory Ramsey, a sophomore, was 28th in 22:39.
Cole Bowen, another sophomore, didn’t run because of illness.
Yates Center High senior Dylan Sicka is going to the state cross country meet for the third straight year. But this is his first qualification for Class 1A.
Sicka, who finished second at state in Class 2A last year, claimed third place in the regional race in 18:18.
There was a race within in the race among area runners. Crest’s Holman and Yates Center High’s Paul Stockebrand battled at the finish line.
“Trevor had a gutsy finish passing Stockebrand at the very end to claim the 10th-place medal,” said Tisha Hug, Crest cross country coach. “Those two battled at the finish line several times this year.”
Stockebrand, a junior, finished 11th in 19:14. That was one place out of qualifying as an individual for state.
“Dylan recovered from his bout with the flu to qualify for state,” said Kevin Barnes, Yates Center cross country coach. “Paul’s finish is the second-best for a YCHS runner at a regional meet.”
Freshman Sam Aguirre took 27th in 22:28 in his first regional meet. Barnes said Aguirre started the year a little late “but had done very well and I look forward to having him back.”
Crest High junior Italy Loving will run in her third straight 1A state meet. Loving placed ninth in the regional 4K race in 18:19.
Freshman Delanie Cammack started the race for Crest but experienced asthma problems. She was unable to finish the race.
Yates Center had two girls in the race also. Junior Cherokee Shaffer took 21st in 20:59 and freshman Chari Dyer was 26th in 22:27.
“Cherokee had an average day when it was going to take a personal record to qualify for state,” Barnes said. “Chari did very well in running distance races. I hope she returns next year.”
The Lancers, Loving and Sicka travel to Wamego this Saturday. The Kansas Class 1-2-3-4 A state cross country meet is at the Wamego Country Club. The 1A girls run at 9:30 a.m. and the boys run at 10:30 a.m.
