Lady Titans, Lady Cubs play in tourney

BURLINGTON — Saturday’s volleyball play went better for Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans than for Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs.
The Lady Titans ended up playing for the championship of the Burlington High Invitational. The Lady Cubs went 1-2.
Lebo, which was in Humboldt’s pool, defeated Southern Coffey County 25-13, 25-16 for the title. The Lady Titans had beaten Waverly 25-15, 25-11 in a semifinal match.
“I thought we played a little sluggish all day long. We eventually started making some good plays as the day went along,” said Korey Lankton, Lady Titan head coach.
“Lebo definitely had a good team but our girls were disappointed not to play them as tough as we are capable. Give Lebo credit, they serve hard and got us out of our game plan.”
In the championship match, Shelby Birk had seven kills for the Lady titans while Laurie Ohl had three blocks and 10 digs. Sam Jacob also had 10 digs. Kristen Garland was credited with 10 set assists.
Against Waverly in the semifinals, Garland had 17 assists and Birk had six kills. Kaitlin Meyer had one block and Ashton Gudenkauf made five digs.
In pool play, Southern Coffey County beat Fredonia 25-21, 25-20, defeated Madison 19-25, 25-18, 25-9 and beat St. Paul 22-25, 25-13, 25-10.
For the tournament, Birk recorded 27 kills and 24 digs for Southern Coffey County and Jacob had 35 kills and 33 digs. Meyer had 19 kills, six blocks and 31 digs and Ohl had 35 kills, 16 blocks and 26 digs. Garland had 82 set assists.
Humboldt lost 25-23, 25-11 to Waverly to open pool play Brandi Malloy had four service points and two aces. Ashley Murrow had four service points.
Lebo decked Humboldt 25-6, 25-10.
“We came out flat against Waverly and had our chances in the first set but didn’t get the job done in the second,” said Stephanie Middleton, Humboldt head coach.
“Lebo was a tremendously talented team.”
The Lady Cubs rebounded by outlasting Burlington 9-25, 25-17, 25-23.
“We played our best volleyball against Burlington. We were down 1-8 in the third set and the girls didn’t give up. They made some good hustle plays to help us get the win.”
Melissa Davidson served up 10 points, four on ace serves, plus had four kills at the net. Lauren Ouderkirk had nine service points and two aces. Malloy and Hannah McCall each had four kills. Amanda Maxton had 12 set assists.
