EMPORIA — Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans came out third in the tough Lyon County League Tournament Saturday.
After winning their four pool matches, the Lady Titans dropped a 28-26, 25-16 decision to Olpe in the semifinals.
“The first set really could have went either way. We were making some great plays to get into position to win it, but we just couldn’t string them together to pull it off,” said Korey Lankton, SCCH head coach. “Olpe gained some confidence after winning the first set and we just weren’t able to overcome it.”
So that put the Lady Titans in the third-place match. They responded with a 25-12, 26-24 win over Madison.
The LCL tournament began Thursday night with pool play. Southern Coffey County defeated Marais Des Cygnes Valley 18-25, 25-20, 25-14 and Madison 25-17, 19-25, 25-20.
On Saturday morning, it beat Waverly 25-8, 25-20 and Burlingame 25-16, 25-7.
“We’re proud to finish in third. We know we could have finished higher but there are some good teams. Some of our lower seeded teams are dangerous,” Lankton said.
“Now we have to focus on postseason play. Tuesday will be a tough regional with some of the same teams we’ve seen all year.”
Lankton did not have any individual statistics from the tournament available for publication.
Southern Coffey County hosts a Class 1A regional tournament Tuesday. Waverly, Flinthills, Yates Center, Hartford and Marais Des Cygnes Valley are the other teams in the regional.
