Lady Titans use final shot to get past Lady Bulldogs

WAVERLY — A pick and roll, pieced together perfectly, paid off in the end for Southern Coffey County High’s girls.
The Lady Titans were trailing host Waverly High 40-39 in the waning seconds of overtime.
Southern Coffey County’s Kaitlin Meyer had the ball and dribbled to the right of the basket.
“And of course all five defenders were going to the ball,” Lady Titan head coach Jeff True said.
Junior guard Samantha Jacob set a screen for Meyer, but the defender fought through it.
A little too well.
“Samantha rolled off the screen and went to the basket, where Kaitlin found her wide open,” True said. “And I mean wide open.”
Jacob collected Meyer’s pass and put in a short layup with 4 seconds left — her only points of the contest. Without a timeout, Waverly frantically inbounded the ball but was unable to get off a shot in the Lady Titans’ 41-40 win.
The victory lifts Southern Coffey County’s record to 6-1 on the season.
“Win or lose, this game was good for us,” True said. “Waverly did a tremendous job of slowing down the game. You have to give them a lot of credit. I don’t think our seniors have faced an opponent who successfully controlled the game like Waverly did tonight.”
Waverly controlled the tempo from the outset with a methodical, four-corners offense, True said.
“We tried some man-to-man, some zone, even some trapping, but they stuck with it,” True said.
Waverly led 10-8 after one quarter before Southern Coffey County led 22-20 at the break. The Lady Bulldogs edged in front 31-10 after three periods.
Meyer and Laurie Ohl shared high-scoring honors for the Lady Titans with 12 points apiece. Ohl and Jacob each had six rebounds. Ohl and Shelby Birk both had three steals. Meyer also dished out four assists.
Ashley Romig led Waverly with 14 points.
“A game like this is good for us because it gives us something we can work on in practice,” True said.
The Lady Titans will play a bit of catch-up next week. They will host Flinthills Tuesday, then play at home against Burlingame on Thursday and at Marais Des Cygnes Valley next week. The latter two games were postponed from earlier in the season because of wintry weather.
