Lancers beat Jayhawks

COLONY — While Crest High’s boys are still scuffling to find an offensive rhythm on the young basketball season, the Lancer defense had already made a difference.
Crest put the clamps on visiting Jayhawk-Linn High in the second half Friday, which led to increased scoring opportunities in a 37-18 victory.
The victory was the second in two days for Crest to open the 2009-10 campaign.
“Offensively, we just have no tempo and no flow,” Crest head coach Travis Hermreck said. “Defensively we didn’t do a bad job. We had a few breakdowns but I was happy with how we did defensively.”
Crest led just 14-10 at halftime and 24-16 after three periods before closing the game with a 13-2 run.
“We really put the clamps down defensively, and forced some turnovers to open our offense,” Hermreck said. “That was important because we’ve been making things hard on ourselves on offense.”
Bryan Newton led the way for Crest with 15 points, followed by Kyle Hammond with 11.
Seth Gabbert and Clayton Dierksen scored six points each to pace the Jayhawks.
Crest returns to action Tuesday in Yates Center to begin the Wildcat Winter Classic. The Lancers will battle Cherryvale.
