Lancers defeat Eagles in consolation play

YATES CENTER — Travis Hermreck found himself in an unusual position Friday evening.
“It’s not often that I’ll sing the praises of my team’s defense in December,” Hermreck said.
But he did this night.
The Lancers coupled a stifling defense with a balanced scoring attack to defeat Uniontown High 52-35 in Yates Center High’s Wildcat Winter Classic.
The victory means that Crest (3-1) will take on West Elk today at 4:30 in the fifth-place game.
“Things really started clicking for us in the second half,” Hermreck said of the win over the Eagles. “We got out on a little run and got some easy baskets and got some separation.”
Crest led the Eagles 23-19 at the break, then pushed the game open with a 16-4 run that spanned the third quarter.
“We did a very good job on defense,” Hermreck said. “Dexter Wiley did a very good job for us. He’s the type of guy who won’t show up in the box score, but he does a lot of the little things we need. And I thought Bryan (Newton) did a great job of running the team. We put nine players in the game, and nine players contributed.”
Kyle Hammond led three players in double figures with 16 points, followed by Zach Stinnett with 11 and Newton with 10. Pete Stoneking scored eight.
DuShaun Robinson scored 14 to lead the Eagles. Ben Dixon followed with 10. The Eagles will take on Altoona-Midway at 3 o’clock in the seventh-place game.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers lost 55-29 to Sedan in the consolation bracket of the tournament Friday night. No game report was called in to the Register.
The Lady Lancers play Altoona-Midway for seventh place at 1:30 today.
