LE ROY — New season, new roles for different personnel and it showed for both eighth-ranked Crest High’s Lancers and Southern Coffey County High’s Titans Thursday night.
“Neither team played great but it was an outstanding game to watch,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest High’s head coach. “I was proud of how hard both teams competed.”
The game was tied 16-16 at halftime. Crest pulled out a 42-38 win on the road against Southern Coffey County in the season opener.
“Our interior defense wasn’t very good, we got outrebounded, couldn’t make a three-point shot, shot miserably from the four line but found a way to win. I’ll take it,” Hermreck said.
The Lancers outscored the Titans 8-5 in the first quarter. Things shifted in the second period as the Titans poured in 11 points to the Lancers’ eight.
Crest had a 12-11 scoring edge in the third quarter. In the final period, the Lancers tossed in 14 points and the Titans netted 11 points.
Southern Coffey County shot 52 percent, 15 of 29, from the field while Crest went 14 of 39 for 36 percent. The Lancers sank 12 of 22 free throw attempts and the Titans hit 6 of 12 tries.
The Titans had a 30 to 23 rebounding edge.
Bryan Newton paced the Lancers with 16 points and four assists. Peter Stone-king had 11 points and six rebounds. Kyle Hammond grabbed five rebounds and made three steals
“This team is still looking for its identity. We have to refine a lot of little things but I was pleased with our will to win,” Hermreck said.
Ben Spencer led the Titans with 11 points. Aaron Ludolph scored nine. No other individual statistics for SCCH were available.
Crest (1-0) has a quick turnaround as it hosts Jayhawk-Linn tonight at Colony.
Southern Coffey County (0-1) hosts Burlingame Tuesday to begin Lyon County League action.
