Mid-season tourneys are here

Next week marks mid-season tournament week for most of the area high school basketball teams. Only Yates Center and Southern Coffey County teams are not in tournaments next week. Southern Coffey County High’s team play in the Lyon County League tournament Jan. 25-30.
Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs are in the 2010 Burlington High Invitational at Burlington. Opening-round games are Tuesday followed by games Friday and Saturday.
The Fillies (1-6) and Mustangs (3-4) are the seventh seeds in their respective brackets. The Fillies play second-seeded Labette County (7-0) Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. while the Mustangs face second-seeded Burlington (6-1) at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. Both games are in the BHS gym.
If the IHS girls win, they play at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at the high school but if they lose it is 3:30 Friday at the Burlington Middle School gym in consolation play. For the IHS boys, win and play an 8:15 p.m. semifinal Friday at the high school or lose and it’s 8:15 at BMS in consolation.
At Burlington, the consolation bracket games are at the middle school Saturday. The third-place and championship games are at the high school.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat teams are in the 2010 Lancer Classic at Southeast High School in Cherokee. The opening round is Tuesday then play resumes Thursday and on Saturday.
Marmaton Valley’s boys are seeded sixth and play Riverton in the first round Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Wildcat girls are the eighth seed and take on top-seeded St. Paul at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Humboldt, Crest and Uniontown teams are in the annual Pleasanton High Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament in Pleasanton. Games are played on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Crest High’s boys are top-seeded and play Prairie View at 7 p.m. Tuesday. In the south gym at 7 o’clock, Uniontown takes on Jayhawk-Linn as the fourth and fifth seeds. Third-seeded Humboldt plays Northeast-Arma at 5:30 p.m. in the south gym.
On the girls’ side, Uniontown is the top seed and plays Humboldt at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the south gym. Crest, seventh-seeded, plays Jayhawk-Linn at 8:30 p.m. in the north gym.
There’s plenty of action throughout the week for high school basketball junkies.

ALLEN COUNTY Community College’s Red Devil teams are at home again Saturday. Highland Community College’s teams come to town in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. Tipoff for the women’s contest is 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 o’clock.
After playing on the road Monday, the Red Devils are back home in a rivalry doubleheader with Neosho County Community College of Chanute Wednesday. Allen County’s students will be back for the second semester next week so the ACCC gym should be rocking.

COACHING NCAA DIVISION I football and being on NBC late-night can be pretty crazy. Guess too much attention was being paid to the constant turnover among the football coaches right now that the entertainment industry wanted some of that ink.
And it appears no one wants that Tennessee football job now. Mike Leach has sued Texas Tech and the “pirate” begins his battle with the establishment.
