Mustang grapplers win SEK matches

CHANUTE — First year in Southeast Kansas League varsity action, Iola High’s Mustangs are starting to get it.
“We wrestled much more physical and offensively than we did Tuesday,” said Ron Schomaker, Mustang head wrestling coach.
“I was proud of the way our kids battled. We took a big step forward (Thursday) night. Hopefully, we’ll continue to keep the momentum going.”
Iola High’s wrestling team was in its second straight SEK double-dual of the week Thursday. The Mustangs lost both duals to Labette County and host Chanute but won matches on the mat in both competitions.
The Mustangs opened against the Grizzlies and lost 48-30. But back-to-back wins by pins from Lee Berg and Joe Myrick had Iola even with Labette at 18-18.
Berg pinned Josh Schlatter in 1 minute, 10 seconds of their six-minute match at 135-pounds. Myrick put John Kelly’s shoulders to the mat in 1:04 of the 140-pound match.
Labette County pulled ahead with a forfeit win at 145. The Grizzlies won the next three matches by falls.
Anthony Whittley pinned Iola’s Devin Culler in 5:26 in the 152-pound match. At 160, Iola’s Marcus Sullivan was pinned in 1:40 by Kansas Class 4A second-ranked John Hambleton.
Labette County’s Asa Walker pinned Iola’s Drew Shepherd in 3:45 of their 171-pound match.
Next on the mat were the 285-pound wrestlers. Iola’s Chris Lynn pinned Bryce Baker in 1:04. Earlier Labette County’s Seth Trimmel pinned Iola’s Brent Clark in 4:37 at 130 pounds.
Iola’s Zeph Larney and Stephen McDonald earned team points via forfeit wins at 125 pounds and 189 pounds, respectively. Labette County got forfeit wins at 103, 119 and 215.
In the way Chanute set up the dual with Iola, the Mustangs were tied, 12-12 with the 10th-ranked Blue Comets after five matches. The lineup went with the top five weight classes first.
So the first-ever SEK dual meet between Iola and Chanute opened with a win by the Mustangs.
Sullivan led Jack Martin 6-0 before he turned him over in the third period at 160. Sullivan’s pin came at the 5:12 mark of the match.
Chanute’s Jared McComb pinned Denton Christian in 1:59 at 171 pounds. That evened the team score at 6-6.
In the 189-pound match, McDonald trailed Chanute’s Skylar McGinnis 2-0 after one period. McDonald was awarded a technical violation point in the second period.
McDonald was in the bottom position as the third period began. He stood up and earned an escape point to tie the match. McDonald took McGinnis down and won the match 4-2.
Iola led 9-6 but Chanute won the 215-pound class by forfeit to go up 12-9.
Lynn took on Jacob LaRue at 285. After a scoreless first period, Lynn was able to put LaRue on his back twice for two three-point nearfalls. LaRue picked up a point at the end of the second period for an escape.
Lynn maintained his lead in the third period with another three-point nearfall and an escape. Lynn recorded a 10-5 victory.
Chanute went ahead to stay with a forfeit win at 119 then Troy Clark pinned Iola’s Larney in 3:47 of the 125-pound match.
Iola’s Brent Clark controlled Chanute’s Chad Klauman from the start of their 130-pound match. He used a takedown and a nearfall to take the lead.
Up 5-1, Clark escaped from the bottom and scored two more points with a takedown in the second period. Clark added another two points in the third period for a 10-1 win.
Chanute’s Felix Santillano pinned Berg in 3:02 of the 135-pound match. Cody Markham pinned Iola’s Joe Myrick in 2:17 at 140.
Chanute got another forfeit win at 145.
Iola’s Culler battled hard against Class 4A’s second-ranked wrestler at 152 pounds. Chanute’s Sam Son was finally able to record a technical fall, 15-point advantage, over Culler at the 3:45 mark.
Chanute won the dual 47-16. Iola is 1-3 in league competition. The Comets also beat Labette County 55-16.
In junior varsity matches Thursday:
Iola’s Zack Vaughn was pinned by Labette County’s Caleb Journot in 2:40 in a 152-pound bout. At 160, Zach Crawford lost 10-5 to Labette County’s Joel Norris and Chase Roettgen was pinned by Colton Grant of LCHS in 2:10.
Against Chanute, Justin Baker was pinned in a 152-pound match by Eli Lewis in 1:44. Kody Mullins was pinned by Tyler Kidwell in 1:39 of a 160-pound match.
Iola’s varsity is idle until the Piper High Invitational tournament in Kansas City, Kan., Jan. 23.
The Mustang junior varsity wrestlers are in Saturday’s Labette County JV tournament in Altamont.
