Mustangs go 1-1 to open SEK dual wrestling action

PARSONS — Iola High’s Mustangs recorded the school’s first-ever dual win in Southeast Kansas League wrestling Tuesday night.
The Mustangs edged Parsons 30-26. Neither team fills all 14 weight classes on a varsity roster but Iola has eight wrestlers to Parsons’ five.
Team points are awarded on forfeits. Iola gained points with Joe Myrick at 140, Kody Mullins at 152, Marcus Sullivan at 160, Stephen McDonald at 189 and Chris Lynn at 285 winning by forfeits.
Parsons took three matches contested on the mat against Iola. Dalton Murdock defeated Iola’s Brent Clark 13-2 at 130 pounds. Billy Virtue won the 135-pound match, beating Iola’s Lee Berg 9-0. Jacob Bevans pinned Iola’s Drew Shepherd at 171 pounds.
The Mustangs then faced Kansas Class 4A 10th-ranked Columbus High’s Titans. Columbus beat Iola 70-12.
Iola’s two wins came in the middle weights. Devin Culler won by forfeit at 152. In the 160-pound match, Sullivan pinned Columbus’ Paul Morris.
The Titans’ full lineup boasts four state ranked wrestlers. Columbus has seven state tournament qualifiers on the varsity team.
“We’re in the tougher part of our schedule now that we’re wrestling in the SEK,” said Ron Schomaker, Iola head coach.
“We wrestled better against Columbus but we’ve got to come out and wrestle tough in our first matches.”
Clark was pinned by Kyle Johnson, who is ranked second at 130 pounds. Berg was pinned by C.J. Freeman in the 135-pound match. Columbus’ Brandon Alberty defeated Shepherd 15-2 at 171.
Nathan Morris, a two-time state qualifier, pinned McDonald in the 189-pound match. And top-ranked and defending 4A state heavyweight champion Tank Burns pinned Iola’s Lynn.
In junior varsity action, Iola’s Zeph Larney pinned Michael Reid of Columbus as did Jason Tidd at 135 pounds. Culler lost to P. Morris 6-5 at 160 pounds. Zack Vaughn wrestled Columbus’ 145-pounder, Aaron Napier, and won 15-3.
The Mustangs, now 1-1 in SEK action and 1-3 overall in dual action.
Iola travels to Chanute Thursday for a league double-dual with Labette County and Chanute.
Iola takes on Labette County at 5:30 p.m. followed by Chanute wrestling Labette County. Iola wrestles Chanute in the final action of the night.
