Pittsburg defeats Pony teams

PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School’s Pony football teams came up short Thursday against Pittsburg Community Middle School’s teams.
After leading 14-6 at halftime, the Iola eighth-grade team lost 22-14. The Ponies are 3-3 on the season.
“We came out and played well. We just couldn’t keep it going for four quarters,” said Marty Taylor, IMS eighth-grade head coach.
Iola’s John Whitworth scored on a 37-yard run in the first quarter. Tyler McIntosh tacked on the two-point conversion run.
Pittsburg came back just before the close of the period to score. It was 8-6.
McIntosh finished a Pony drive with a two-yard scoring run with 21 seconds left in the first half. Iola’s two-point conversion attempted failed, leaving Iola’s lead at 14-6.
Pittsburg tied the game up in the third quarter and took the lead when it blocked an Iola punt for a safety in the fourth quarter. Leading 16-14, Pittsburg added a touchdown at the end of the game.
Whitworth rushed for 113 yards on 15 carries. McIntosh and Bryce Misenhelter each had 13 yards rushing.
McIntosh was 1 of 6 passing for 10 yards. The pass was to Whitworth.

IOLA’S SEVENTH-grade Ponies dropped a 32-8 decision. The IMS seventh-grade team is 4-2 on the season.
Pittsburg’s Alex Barnes scored four touchdowns to lead his team to 32-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Ponies mounted a scoring drive with a mixture of running by Kaden Macha and Trey Colborn and a long pass to Isaiah Grover from Drew Faulhaber. Macha had the touchdown run then Faulhaber hit Alex Bauer for the two-point conversion pass.
Faulhaber also had a 30-yard pass to Terrell Smith as time expired in the game.
The IMS teams travel to Coffeyville next Thursday to finish the season.
