Ponies split games with Rockets

Iola Middle School’s Ponies had their home openers Thursday against Chanute’s Royster Middle School Rockets.
The IMS eighth-grade A-team held the Rockets to two points in the first half and five points in three quarters. Iola won the game 35-18.
“These kids take pride in their defense and it showed,” said Marty Taylor, IMS coach. “Everybody got a lot of playing time and played well.”
Tyler McIntosh poured in 14 points and Adam Kauth had 11. Tyler Powelson scored six points and had four rebounds. John Whitworth had four points.
In the eighth-grade B-team game, Royster won 17-13. Iola got five points from Fryendz Wallace and four from Derrick Weir. Dylan Bryan had three points and Michael Wilson scored one point.
Royster’s Rockets closed out a close seventh-grade A-team game with an 11-6 run. The Ponies dropped a 31-27 decision.
“When these kids take the ball to the basket, they’re a pretty good team. When we settle for 20-foot jump shots we struggle,” Taylor said.
Isaiah Grover had 11 points for Iola. Kaden Macha added seven and Shane Walden had six. Drew Faulhaber scored two points. Alex Bauer pulled six rebounds and had one point.
Iola won the seventh-grade B-team game 27-16 led by Drake Dieker and Matt Jacobs with eight points each. Christian Troxel had four points followed by Brock Peters with three. Adam Peterson and Colten Storrer each had two points.
Iola hosts Columbus Monday.
