For the second straight night, Iola Middle School’s girls played basketball games at home. Pittsburg Community Middle School came to town Tuesday.
The IMS seventh-grade B-team improved to 2-0 with a 20-5 win over Pittsburg. Leading the way were Jo Lohman, Brianne Jett and Emmalee Seabolt with four points each.
Scoring two points each were Emery Driskel, Morgan Wilson, Addie Haar and Chelsea Lee.
In seventh-grade A-team play, the Ponies claimed their first win of the season, 18-15. It was a close game throughout as Iola led 8-6 at halftime and 12-11 after three quarters.
Torrie Lewis fired in eight points for IMS and Emma Piazza had four points. Katie Shields, Lexie Long and Haley Slater each had two points.
“It’s good for the girls to get a win under their belt,” said Marty Taylor, IMS basketball coach. “They did a good job late in the game. We have a long way to go for these girls to get where they should be.”
Iola’s eighth-grade teams were not as fortunate. Pittsburg won the B-team game 18-8. Iola got four points from Halie Cleaver and two each from Mackenzie Wese-loh and Karlie Lower.
The IMS eighth-grade A-team Ponies trailed 16-4 at halftime. Pittsburg went on to win 28-15.
“We didn’t come out with much fire but after the first couple of minutes the girls really played hard,” Taylor said.
Alexis Hobbs scored six points to lead Iola. Emma Sigg added five and Chay Hutton tossed in four points.
“Chay has turned into a leader on the floor. She’s doing a great job,” Taylor said.
Iola travels to Columbus Thursday. There will be three games played at Columbus.
