Ponies take three of four games

PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade Ponies gave up 12 points in four quarters Tuesday night. They scored 36 points.
“The defense set the tone all night,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach, about the Ponies’ eighth-grade A-team victory over host Pittsburg Community Middle School.
“Tyler Powelson and Bryan Mueller played very well.”
Powelson fired in nine points and had three rebounds while Mueller added six points. Tyler McIntosh and Adam Kauth each had seven points.
John Whitworth pulled down six rebounds. Scoring two points each were Whitworth, Trent Latta and Trey Wilson. Derrick Weir had one point.
The Ponies were up 6-1 at the end of one quarter and held a 21-5 halftime lead. The pattern continued in the second half with Iola outscoring Pittsburg 15-7.
Iola’s eighth-grade B-team notched a 27-20 win. Weir fired in 12 points. Fryendz Wallace added six points followed by five from Jesse Zimmerman. Tristan Sigfusson and Wilson had two points each.
Pittsburg won the seventh-grade A-team game 35-27. Iola led 19-17 at halftime.
“We came out and played well in the first half but we need more consistent effort,” Taylor said.
Kaden Macha scored 11 points and had nine rebounds. Drew Faulhaber tossed in seven points followed by Shane Walden with four, Alex Bauer with three and Isaiah Grover with two. Grover also had six rebounds.
Iola won the seventh-grade B-team game, 16-10. Scoring four points each were Brock Peters, Matt Jacobs, Adam Peterson and Drake Dieker.
Iola hosts Chanute’s Royster Middle School Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
