Pony boys open basketball season

INDEPENDENCE — Iola Middle School’s Pony boys opened the 2010 basketball season Monday on the road.
The eighth-grade A-team dropped a heartbreak, 30-29, to host Independence Middle School. Iola led 12-10 at halftime and still had a slim 22-21 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Independence outscored Iola 9-7 in the final period of play to notch the win.
“Defensively, we were very good most of the night. We just never settled into a rhythm on offense,” said Marty Taylor, Iola head coach.
“Overall it was a pretty good effort. Four of 12 from the (free-throw) line needs to improve.”
Trent Latta led the Ponies with seven points while Tyler McIntosh and Tyler Powelson each had six points. John Whitworth had five points and four rebounds.
Adam Kauth scored four points and had four rebounds. Bryan Mueller had one point.
Independence won the eighth-grade B-team game 41-3. Trey Wilson had two points and Dylan Bryan had one point.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team used a 12-5 run in the fourth quarter to pull out a 28-25 win over Independence. Independence was up 14-8 at halftime.
“The kids came out with some first-game jitters but did a good job after they calmed down,” Taylor said. “It’s great to start out with a win but we have a long way to go.”
Isaiah Grover, who had 14 points, made a couple of clutch free throws at the end, Taylor said. Kaden Macha pulled down eight rebounds and scored four points.
Alex Bauer added four points. Drew Faulhaber, Shane Walden and Adam Peterson each had two points. Faulhaber and grover had five rebounds apiece.
The seventh-grade B-team game went to Independence, 27-10. Matt Jacobs tossed in six points for Iola while Christian Troxel and Drake Dieker each had two points.
Iola travels to Pittsburg today then hosts Chanute’s Royster Middle School Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
