PARSONS — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade A-team broke through the ice Saturday. The Ponies had been frozen out of the win column.
The Ponies won the third-place game in the Parsons’ Winter Classic. They defeated Pittsburg 30-12 for their first win of the season.
“These girls deserve a lot of credit,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “Sports are easy when everything is going great and people are constantly patting you on your back and telling you how good you are but these girls have gone through some rough patches.
“They worked hard every day in practice and did a great job Saturday.”
Alexis Hobbs led the way with seven points, Katie Kelly had five points. Scoreing four points each were Emma Sigg, Courtney Smith and Darci Collins.
Chay Hutton tossed in three poitns. Halie Cleaver added two points and Karlie Lower had one point.
Girard defeated Iola 29-15 in the first round. Paige Miller and Hobbs each had five points for Iola. Katie Kelley had three and Hutton had two points.
Iola’s eighth and seventh-grade team travel to Parsons this afternoon to finish the season.
