Red Devils’ fast start doesn’t hold up

HUTCHINSON — Allen County Community College’s Red Devils had what they wanted. A 9-0 lead on the 10th-ranked Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons.
But the lead didn’t hold up against their hosts. The Red Devil men saw their advantage disappear.
Allen County led 24-19 with just over seven minutes left in the first half. Hutchinson went on a 21-0 run and never looked back.
The Blue Dragons defeated the Red Devils 86-64 Tuesday. They led 42-30 at halftime.
Allen County dropped to 3-4 on the season. Hutchinson improved to 9-0.
The Red Devils had wiped out a 16-point deficit against the Blue Dragons in the teams’ first meeting, Nov. 9 in Iola. The Dragons escaped with a 71-69 win that night.
Hutchinson did not allow the Red Devils to mount a comeback in the second game. The Blue Dragons stretched their lead to as much as 25 points in the second half.
Allen County struggled shooting the basketball. The Red Devils shot just 36 percent, 23 of 64, from the field. They were just 2 of 19, 10.5 percent, from three-point range.
After going 6 of 8 from the free-throw line in the first half, the Red Devils were 10 of 18 in the second half. Hutchinson finished 21 of 28 at the line.
The Blue Dragons connected on 31 of 62, 50 percent, shots from the field. They were 3 of 11 from three-point range.
Allen County sophomore point guard Anthony Clagett led the way with 13 points. He was 7 of 12 from the line. Sophomore forward Andra Bailey had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and seven steals.
Sophomore Dennis Rumph, back from a knee injury, scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Red Devils. Freshman Erik Law added 11 points.
Seeing his first action for Allen County was 6-6 sophomore Chris Lee. Lee, who had a preseason knee injury, scored six points.
Hutchinson had a 47 to 36 edge in rebounding over Allen County.
The Blue Dragons had four players score 12 points each — Joe Mitchell, Bruce Reed, Josh Davis and Elhadji Wade. Garrius Holloman added 11 points.
Allen County gets ready for two Jayhawk Eastern Division contests next week. The Red Devils open conference play Wednesday at Johnson County then go to Cowley County on Dec. 5.
The Red Devils close out the first semester of action at home. They play Arkansas Tech on Dec. 7 then Penn Valley on Dec. 9. Both games start at 7 p.m.
