After Hutchinson’s Joe Mitchell, who had a game-high 27 points, sank one of two free throws putting his team up 71-69, the Blue Dragons took a timeout. Allen County was out of timeouts.
“Our two starting guards were on the bench with five fouls. We played with just eight guys tonight,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC head coach. “I really believed we had a chance at winning it if we got a shot in the air at the end.”
But the Red Devils didn’t get a shot up.
Allen County got the ball up the court but under a lot of pressure by the Dragons. Mitchell stripped the ball away from ACCC freshman Erik Law on a drive to the basket.
“I told our guys that that play did not lose the game for us. It could have won it for us but it didn’t lose it,” Hayes said of the final possession.

Allen County plays State Fair Community College of Sediala, Mo., Friday at 8 p.m. The Red Devils take on Northern Oklahoma College Enid at 8 p.m. Saturday.
“I want to give Hutchinson all the credit it deserves. We were making adjustments to each other throughout the game,” Hayes said.
“With the injuries, we just had eight players available tonight and we got tired which led to foul trouble. I’m proud of how our kids hung in there even down by 16. We got ourselves in a position to win.”

Hayes drilled a three-pointer to make it 68-65. The Red Devils took their final time out with 31.8 seconds to play.
Dylan Frantz hit one of two charities for the Dragons but Allen County lost Clagett to his fifth foul. Hayes sank two free throws to make it a two-point game, 69-67, with 20 seconds left.
Frantz repeated his stint at the line which was countered by Rumph netting two free throws for ACCC at the 18.6-second mark, closing the gap to one point.
Mitchell’s one free throw gave his team the two-point lead. Then he got the game-saving steal.
“Our kids played with great effort. We just didn’t execute as well as we need to,” Hayes said.
