CANEY — Varsity wrestling medals were won by Iola High wrestlers for the first time Saturday.
In their first-ever varsity tournament, the Mustang wrestlers scored 66 points and finished sixth in a seven-team tournament. It was the 2009 Kan/Okla Wrestling Classic hosted by Caney Valley High School Saturday.
Marcus Sullivan, a junior, captured first place in the 160-pound weight class. In the round-robin pool format tournament, Sullivan went 4-0 to take the gold medal.
Sullivan is in his second season of wrestling and won three of his matches Saturday by pins. That included pinning Dillon Packard of Independence in 1:12 of the final round of competition to win the division.
Chris Lynn, a junior in his first year of high school wrestling, placed third in the 285-pound weight class. Lynn went 3-1, winning the last three matches by pins to earn his medal.
Iola placed six of its eight wrestlers in the tournament in the top six of their respective weight classes. Junior Lee Berg and freshman Stephen McDonald took fifth places while sophomores Devin Culler and Denton Christian were sixth.

“The tournament was a great chance to get some experience, which is what we need,” said Ron Schomaker, IHS head coach. “We improved from our Thursday meet in a few areas that we worked on Friday in practices.
“It’s going to be a learning process all year. We’re playing catch-up due to our lack of experience but no matter what happens, we’ve got to bring a hard-working attitude to practice and keep improving.”
Sullivan pinned Brian Dixon of Caney Valley then defeated Nick Eytcheson of Caney Valley 10-5. He pinned Justin Young of Coffeyville in his third match then beat Packard.
Lynn got two escapes in his match with Miguel Zaragaza of West Elk to win 2-0. Lynn was pinned in 3:59 of his next match by Dakota Denny of Caney Valley. Lynn pinned Anthony Gonzalez of Fredonia, Ethan Smith of Independence and Tyler Post of Caney Valley.
Berg lost his first two matches of the day in the 135-pound division. He came back to pin Bo Elias of Bartlesville in 2:27. Berg dropped an 8-4 decision to David Munday of Caney Valley then pinned Errion Dungy of Independence.

McDonald was pinned by Raul Pascual of Coffeyville to open the tournament. McDonald notched his first high school win with a pin of C.J. Hill, Independence, in 2:39. McDonald was pinned by Thomas Durham Fredonia in his next match.
Christian had a rough start, losing back-to-back matches by getting pinned. Christian rebounded to pin Trevor Harrison of Caney Valley in 4:23 of their six-minute match.
That set up a fifth-place match between the Iola teammates. McDonald won the match 11-0 over Christian.
