Iola High’s Alec Peterson (42) battles with Fort Scott High’s Mikey Karleskint (22) for a rebound in Tuesday’s Southeast Kansas League game. Visiting Fort Scott won the game 65-42.

Iola High’s Mustangs matched three for three to open Tuesday’s Southeast Kansas League game with visiting Fort Scott High’s Tigers.
Fort Scott’s Gary Floyd hit a three and Iola’s Kent Toland countered with a trey of his own. Then it became a runaway game.
The Tigers went on a 15-2 run to lead 18-5 by the close of the first quarter. They continued to pull away for a 65-42 victory.
“We played well in spurts. Unfortunately, our spurts were not long enough and too few to catch up to Fort Scott,” said Mustang head coach Steve Taylor.
“Fort Scott shot the ball very well tonight. We were not able to match that.”
The Mustangs shot just 38 percent, 13 of 34, from the field. Taylor was happy with a 14 of 17 stint at the free-throw line for his team.
The Tigers connected for nine three-pointers in the game. They cashed in on 10 of 13 free throw attempts.
Iola fell to 2-4 in SEK play and overall. The Mustangs travel to Girard for a makeup non-league contest Thursday, then return home for a SEK game with Coffeyville Friday.
“We’re not doing the little things, you know the non-glory things, in a game in order to win,” Taylor said.
The Mustangs were down by as many as 15, 25-10, in the second quarter.
Michael Middleton led one of the Iola spurts, scoring six of the next eight points. With Seth Walden adding two free throws, the Mustangs closed to within seven, 25-18, with 1:01 left in the period.
Floyd nailed a three-pointer and Middleton countered with two free throws. But with 2.6 seconds on the clock, Floyd was fouled and knocked down three free throws to give the Tigers a 32-20 halftime advantage.
Seth Walden opened the second half with a basket and Alec Peterson hit one of two free throws for Iola. The Tigers rattled off 11 straight, which included threes by Johnathan Stark and Cody Harper, who hit two straight. It was 43-23 midway through the quarter.
Fort Scott led 49-30 heading into the fourth period. The Tigers outscored the Mustangs 16-12 in the final eight minutes.
Toland, who drained three treys, and Middleton each had 13 points and two assists for Iola. Seth Walden ended with 11 points. Alec Peterson had six rebounds.
Iola turned the ball over 21 times.
Leading the Tigers was Floyd with 15 points. Harper added 13 and Griffin Knopp scored 11.
Fort Scott is 5-1 in the SEK and 6-3 overall, just a half-game behind SEK leader Coffeyville (5-0, 5-0). Coffeyville beat Parsons 65-53 Tuesday.
Fort Scott made a sweep of the games Tuesday.
The Tigers took the junior varsity contest 57-40. Braden Larson scored nine and Jerrik Sigg had eight points for Iola.
Fort Scott beat Iola’s freshmen 62-53. Mason Coons had 21 points and Levi Ashmore 18 for Iola.
