Wildcat girls beat Eagles for Classic championship

YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls never backed down Saturday evening in the 2009 YCHS Wildcat Winter Classic championship game.
The Wildcats used a 19-6 run in the third quarter against Uniontown High’s Eagles. The Wildcats went on to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season, winning the tournament with a 51-39 decision.
“We just came out flat and could not get into any flow,” said Ken Holt, Uniontown head coach. “Give Yates Center credit. They really out-worked us.”
Cherryvale defeated West Elk 47-28 for third place Saturday. Sedan took fifth place by beating Altoona-Midway 47-28.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers lost 54-16 to Erie in the seventh-place game Saturday.
“The girls played great defense and we finished shots,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center head coach, of the championship game. “I was very pleased with their intensity after halftime. We came out ready to play and finished the game strong.”
At halftime, Uniontown led 20-18. Yates Center had the big third quarter and stayed out in front with a 14-13 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Kassy Reynolds paced the Wildcats with 13 points. Autumn Douglas tossed in 11 points plus pulled down 10 rebounds and made six steals. Douglas also blocked six shots.
Emily Baker, who had two threes, scored eight points and had five assists. Baker took second in the girls’ three-point contest.
Jessica Hartwig had eight points and six steals. Cherokee Shaffer and Drew Spencer each had eight rebounds.
Uniontown was led by Abbie Smith with 14 points and four steals. Jacy Ermel had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hope Jurgensen handed out two assists and made four steals.
The Wildcats shot 44 percent, 19 of 43, from the field to the Eagles’ 31 percent, 14 of 45. Yates Center went 11 of 26 at the free-throw line as Uniontown sank 11 of 20 tries.
Uniontown had 30 turnovers and only 18 rebounds. Yates Center handled 34 rebounds
“We have to regroup and get ready or St. Paul on Tuesday,” Holt said. Uniontown (3-1) hosts St. Paul Tuesday.
Yates Center has won three games in a row since losing its season opener. The Wildcats go to Neodesha Tuesday.
Crest finished eighth as the Lady Lancers lost to Erie. Erie led 32-10 at halftime.
Amanda Strickler, Melissa Honn and Kristen Golden each had four points for Crest. Erie got 13 points from Tiffany Dean and 12 from Kailey Cleaver.
Crest (0-5) goes to Melvern tonight to play Marais Des Cgynes Valley High to conclude its first semester play.
