YATES CENTER — It appeared that Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls would mark their first Tri-Valley League win of the season at home Tuesday.
But Bri Smedley’s last-second three-pointer broke the Wildcats’ hearts. Smedley’s trey lifted her team, Cherryvale High’s Lady Chargers, to a 41-39 win.
Yates Center charged out to a 17-7 lead through the first eight minutes of play.
The Wildcats controlled a 24-17 halftime lead.
“Cherryvale changed defenses on us throughout the game and we didn’t adjust very well, especially in the second half,” said Abbie Collins, Wildcat head coach.
“In the end, we didn’t take care of the basketball well enough.”
Cherryvale outscored Yates Center 12-4 in the third quarter and 12-11 in the final eight minutes.
Drew Spencer led the Wildcats with 10 points and five steals. Cherokee Shaffer pulled down 11 rebounds and had five steals.
Cherryvale got 14 points from Mary Reilly and 12 from Smedley.
The Wildcats fell to 0-4 in TVL play and 3-4 overall. They travel to Humboldt in league action Friday.
Yates Center won the junior varsity game Tuesday 30-26. Daryean Estes scored 14 points for the Wildcats.
