YCHS girls advance to title game

YATES CENTER — Defensive intensity has paved the way for a berth in the Wildcat Winter Classic for Yates Center High’s girls.
The host Wildcats erased an early three-point deficit on the strength of their defense in a 45-36 win.
The victory puts Yates Center in the championship game against Uniontown at 6:15 p.m. Saturday in Norris Gymnasium. Uniontown edged Cherryvale 48-47 Thursday night.
“We played much better tonight,” Wildcat head coach Abbie Collins said. “We didn’t take real good care of the ball at the end of the game, but I was happy with our effort. (Cherokee) Shaffer had a very good game tonight.”
Yates Center erased an early 12-9 deficit by outscoring West Elk 27-15 over the second and third quarters. The Wildcats led 23-19 at the break.
“We played hard on defense,” Collins said. “We need to stop reaching on defense and committing fouls, though.”
Shaffer led the Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Autumn Douglas followed with 13 boards, and Emily Baker and Drew Spencer each had nine points and three assists. Jessica Hartwig grabbed three steals.
Sabetha Young paced West Elk with 12 points, the only Patriot player in double figures.
Yates Center also came out on top in a junior varsity contest against West Elk, 39-14. Daryean Estes and Blake Crossfield led the Wildcat JV with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
