Yates Center boys lose to Chargers

YATES CENTER — For two quarters, the Yates Center High boys stood toe-to-toe with a decidedly taller Cherryvale High squad.
The Wildcats led 21-17 at the break before the visiting Charger squad emerged from halftime with a different strategy.
“They really did a good job of feeding the ball inside to take advantage of their height,” Yates Center head coach Jason Weilert said.
Cherryvale outscored Yates Center 27-17 after the break to win 46-38.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-3 on the season.
“They wound up getting a lot of second-chance points,” Weilert said. “Even when we’d stop them, they’d be there for the rebound.
“It was a good game,” he said. “We fought hard. There just wasn’t a lot more we could do.”
The Wildcats were able to stay within reach while Cherryvale struggled from the free throw line down the stretch. The Chargers hit only 2 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter.
“We had opportunities, but we couldn’t get the ball to drop,” Weilert said. “It was the type of game that if a couple of our shots had fallen early, it might have been a different game.”
Jake Morrison scored 20 points and Dalton Smith had nine to lead Yates Center.
Micah Booe’s game-high 24 points paced the Chargers.
Yates Center returns to action Friday at Humboldt.
